DUTIES:
Assesses political developments affecting major political parties and local/state political campaigns for their possible success and impact on members’ welfare. Prepares background reports on topics such as: union political activity, state political events, candidate viability, event planning, redistricting, campaign finances and delegate selection. Meets with political candidates, campaign directors and political policy research institutions to monitor and assess political developments. Conducts political training workshops in political motivation, campaign activities and membership involvement to acquaint members with AFSCME’s position on political, legislative and administrative issues and matters of importance to the union. Coordinates the planning, execution and management of an entire affiliate campaign or handles AFSCME’s involvement in a campaign. Assesses candidates on federal, state, and local levels of government to determine candidate viability and recommend degree of union involvement. Plans and executes state and grassroots lobbying strategies and performs appropriate lobbying activities as directed. Promotes and implements the PEOPLE program.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in political science, government, or a related field; three to ten years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive experience in public speaking, lobbying and writing. Effective political analysis skills. Extensive experience in political campaign design, political targeting techniques, budgeting, training, and management. Ability to work under deadline pressures. Familiarity with national political scenes. Knowledge of scientific polling techniques. Knowledge of computer software. Extensive travel, extended work hours and a valid driver’s license are required. Temporary relocation may be necessary. Commitment to the union and its mission.
