DUTIES: Lobby effectively AFSCME MN Council 5’s legislative agenda at the Minnesota state legislature. Work with team of member activists, other political representative(s), political organizers, and other union field staff to mobilize our membership in support of our legislative agenda. Prepare member lobbyists for in-district meetings with legislators, Capitol visits, committee testimony, etc. Play an important role in our annual Day-On-The-Hill (DOTH)-one of the largest at the Capitol. Have policy knowledge necessary to draft and analyze legislation. Maintain and build coalitions with organizations and individuals that are helpful in moving forward our legislative agenda.
This position will take the lead on human services issues. One of the largest sectors in AFSCME MN Council 5 is human service workers. The position will also be assigned other issue areas.
Off-session the political representative will continue to monitor activity in their issue areas, serve on legislative commissions, etc. They will also assist with member mobilization in other areas (eg. electoral campaigns.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4 years experience in a legislative/lobbying position
- Good knowledge of human services issues
- Knowledge of legislative process
- A commitment to economic and social justice
- Ability to motivate and lead others to action
- Initiative
- Excellent one-on-one and written communications skills
- Ability to work long, hard, odd hours (including nights and weekends)
- Valid driver’s license, functioning car, and ability to travel
- Good computer skills including word processing and database management
- Ability to research issues, elected officials, legislative districts, etc.
Salary and benefits determined by range set by collective bargaining agreement.
