The Retirees Department oversees AFSCME’s retiree organization -- comprising almost 250,000 members and over 250 local groups around the country. The department supports AFSCME’s major focus on organizing, politics, and building affiliate capacity. The department also follows federal, state and local retirement issues – particularly those affecting public pensions and retiree health care benefits. Other department functions include: mounting retiree organizing drives; conducting education programs on retirement and pre-retirement topics; and mobilizing retiree members for legislative and political campaigns.
DUTIES:
Provides research on selected topics supporting AFSCME's retiree organization. Research areas include gathering background information for retiree organizing drives; monitoring public sector pension and health care issues and following national and state legislative issues that affect senior citizens. Assists with preparation of organizing, educational and membership materials - including the development of flyers, brochures and newsletters. Contacts and collects information from Retiree Chapters for use in department publications. Writes brief items for newsletter and prepares routine correspondence from draft to final form for review and signature. May design forms and other documents in support of clerical activities. Handles telephone requests for information from internal and external sources, including AFSCME retiree-members. May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an associate's degree and three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent knowledge of office and organizational procedures. High level proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of databases and the ability to produce adhoc reports. Excellent English and writing skills. Excellent telephone and customer service skills. Communication skills sufficient to obtain and share research information. Strong ability to perform internet-based research. Math skills sufficient to perform simple calculations and comparative analyses. Capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Highly motivated, organized self-starter. Occasional travel may be required.
