- AFSCME librarian wins prestigious labor award
Susan Veltfort, president of Local 1857, King County Library System Employees, AFSCME Council 2 was presented with the individual Mother Jones Award by the Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) on August 16, 2007. This labor award recognizes the recipient’s efforts for dignity and respect for all working men and women in Washington State. Susan is the first librarian to win this award, which was given by the state's AFL-CIO affiliate, representing 400,000 unionized workers in Washington. - - - Congratulations Susan!
- One on One with Award-Winning Children's Writer & AFSCME Member Susan Patron
AFSCME Works, May/June 2007. Her most recent novel, "The Higher Power of Lucky", won the prestigious Newberry Medal for the most distinguished children's book published last year. It also placed her at the center of a controversy over censorship and freedom of speech.
