Public Works

AFSCME public workers repairing roadAFSCME's public works members provide services that hopefully go unnoticed, but not unappreciated. When you rise in the morning to turn on the water for that first cup of coffee, throw the remains down the sink and put the trash in the can, an AFSCME member comes behind you to take it from there. They maintain the streets across America, plow the snow, direct traffic, write parking tickets and keep you safe with signage and signals. The importance of these workers and their work was acknowledged by Martin Luther King in 1968 when he went to Memphis to support AFSCME sanitation and other public works workers who were on strike for respect, justice and a union contract.

"Public works workers keep America running. With a union, we remind people of the important things we do and fight to get the pay and benefits we deserve."
