This position processes, reviews and inputs a variety of financial and accounting transactions according to Union and department policies and procedures.  Uses one or more accounting software systems, spreadsheets and word processing software to perform required tasks.  Additional duties will include:

DUTIES:        

  • Receive, sort and distribute incoming checks.
  • Batch all checks by source of funds.
  • Use remote-deposit capture software to create a bank deposit for each batch.
  • Make daily trip to the post office to check for PEOPLE receipts.
  • Make in person bank deposits when necessary.
  • Prepare daily deposit journal entries.
  • Keep up to date log of batch pickups.
  • Look up and match payors, members and affiliates with their respective records in accounting systems.
  • Maintain orderly records of deposits and journals.
  • Assist in reconciliations of bank accounts.
  • Key journal entries into the general ledger as assigned.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: 

Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent and one year of bookkeeping or accounting coursework at the college level with a minimum of one year experience in an automated accounting environment. Accounting Degree preferred.
  • Additional bookkeeping or accounting courses is desirable.
  • Knowledge of AFSCME's accounting processes and related polices; knowledge of general bookkeeping; communication skills sufficient to exchange routine information with staff and vendors; ability to operate calculator/adding machine and to input data to automated accounting systems and other office equipment; and ability to use a PC and MS Office software.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of AFSCME’s accounting processes and related policies.
  • General bookkeeping knowledge.
  • Sufficient communication skills to exchange routine information with staff and vendors.
  • Ability of operate calculator/adding machine and to input data into automated accounting systems and other office equipment.
  • Ability to use a PC and MS Office software.
  • Bookkeeping or accounting coursework desirable.
  • Periodic overtime is required.
