This position will lead one of the most dynamic national organizing projects in the labor movement. Across the country thousands of unorganized workers in museums, libraries, zoos and other cultural institutions are joining tens of thousands of currently organized AFSCME members to fight for a brighter future that includes workplace democracy and equity. Incumbent is a leader who can coordinate their activities and support and execute a long-term vision by setting and achieving short term benchmarks around targeting, campaign planning, and worker leader and staff development. Private sector organizing and leadership experience is required.  Additional duties include:

DUTIES:

  • Assesses project needs and allocates staff and other resources accordingly.
  • Supervise, train, evaluate and mentor
  • Manages relationships with organizing committees and union leadership to develop and execute effective campaigns and teach the AFSCME Organizing Model.
  • Responsible for leading the Union’s organizing efforts in the assigned area in the most efficient, economical, and effective manner possible.
  • Plans, assesses needs, and allocates resources; oversees the progress and effectiveness of each; guides staff and leadership toward successful completion of projects.
  • Supervises International and affiliate staff in campaigns for new collective bargaining laws and related organizing.
  • Leads and administers organizing campaigns by identifying targets and developing a strategic plan according to the “AFSCME Organizing Model.”
  • Establishes goals and standards, conducts performance reviews, and makes appropriate recommendations regarding retention.
  • Manages the assigned human and financial resources; determines the programmatic capability; administers the physical facility; and establishes and maintains all necessary business and operational relationships required to manage an enterprise efficiently.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in labor studies, labor relations or political science desirable.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years related experience union leadership, acting in an official capacity to plan, administer and coordinate major union activities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the needed knowledge, skills and abilities.

Skills:

  • Candidates should have significant previous union experience such as representation, organizing and/or political action; prior management experience; and/or considerable related experiences. Knowledge about the union movement and AFSCME.
  • Demonstrate leadership through engaging directly in the work while developing, sharing and holding themselves and others accountable to a shared vision.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor unions and organizing as well as labor laws, both public and private.
  • Advanced ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities and ability to establish and maintain effective work
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and fiscally manage large
  • Advanced oral and written communications
  • Advanced ability to analyze research data and make logical
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer and associated
  • Bi-lingual skills may be desirable in certain

Travel and work hours:

  • Extended work hours and extensive travel are required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
