This position is responsible for coordinating and conducting education and training programs as assigned and for revising and/or developing training curricula and materials. This position is based in an area or regional office.    

The incumbent is involved in developing and conducting a variety of education programs for AFSCME activists, leaders, and staff.  Programs can include virtual and in-person presentations at affiliate offices, day-long or weekend seminars, workshops at conferences and week-long programs.  Education needs include leadership training, organizing training, steward/activist training, racial social and economic equity, and other topics as assigned.

The incumbent is expected be proficient in designing engaging virtual training using online platforms such as zoom, GoToMeeting etc., and must possess competencies needed to advance equity and inclusion in our education programs and day to day work. Incumbents must prioritize responsibilities and work within established timelines and be able to determine whether he or she should conduct presentations or recommend other staff to present information.

DUTIES:  

Program Development:

  • Coordinates the scheduling of and planning for all assigned education and training programs; assists with recruitment of participants; develops program content; develops and/or orders materials; conducts portions of or an entire training program.
  • Works with affiliates or staff who request training to identify training objectives and plan training programs. Works with affiliates or staff to develop education plans for particular campaigns (e.g. organizing campaigns, strike preparation, contract campaigns).   In some cases, trains affiliate activists and staff to conduct training programs. Coaches and provides follow-up training in the field for participants in training programs.
  • Where appropriate, training must be conducted virtually.

Training Material:

  • Creates, modifies, and revises program materials to address specific needs. Materials may include appropriate examples, role-play scenarios, exercises, case studies, and discussion questions.
  • For new/special courses, researches subject area, writes outline, and prepares/produces materials to be used.  May integrate material from existing programs and curricula.  Field tests new material and seeks feedback from participants to refine curricula and materials.

Other:

  • When necessary makes logistical arrangements associated with educational programs which may include determining attendance, arranging for meeting and sleeping rooms with hotels/motels, selecting menus and meal services, and requesting audio/visual and other equipment needs. Reconciles billing statements and approves for payment.
  • Assists with nationally targeted organizing campaigns and political action campaigns as needed.
  • Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on regional activities that can be incorporated into departmental summaries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in labor relations, education or organization development; minimum of five (5) years’ experience in union organizing and/or representation; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Labor Education:

  • Thorough knowledge of adult teaching and learning techniques.
  • Knowledge of labor unions and the associated training of activists, leaders, and staff.
  • Ability to develop training curricula and conduct effective training presentations in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to select or develop appropriate teaching materials.
  • Ability to measure progress and evaluate training effectiveness.
  • Ability to use all forms of multi-media visual aids.

Other Skills:

  • Ability to use computer and associated software, including web-based applications.
  • Ability to develop work plans, work with minimal direction and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Experience in union organizing (desirable).

Travel:

  • Must be able to drive and coach organizers conducting site and home visits.
  • Travel and evening/weekend work are extensive and required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
