What We’re Looking For:

AFSCME Council 28 is recruiting an experienced labor educator to design and implement new and existing education programs. This position will fulfill two critical training components of the Council: 1) Member resources; and 2) internal staff training. This position will work closely with the Director of Member and Staff Development, Executive Leadership Team and key stakeholders to assess and implement staff and member training needs for the Council. Areas of work will include workshops, train the trainer, online education, mentorship and coaching, Council programs (e.g., steward, new employee outreach), labor community partnerships and conferences. Often work assignments will be project-based according to the current needs and priorities of the Council.

As an experienced educator, this position is responsible for working with the Director of Member and Staff Development and key stakeholders to develop and enhance organizational training strategy, oversee its implementation and assess its outcomes for members and staff. This position will identify training and developmental needs and drive suitable training initiatives that develop staff and member skills. This position will choose appropriate training methods per case (simulations, mentoring, on the job training, professional development, etc) and develop training and development plans that address these needs and expectations.

Typical Work:

  • Work with the AFSCME International Union education department, Washington State Labor Education and Research Center, Oregon Labor Education Resource Center, and other resources to provide high quality education programs for WFSE Council 28.
  • Coordinate training and leadership development for Council 28, WFSE staff and members.
  • Development of member and staff education program and curricula, including but not limited to: leadership development, member organizing, contract campaigns, new employee outreach, internal organizing, know your rights, representation, conducting meetings, negotiations, effective communications, using effective research, electoral issues, coalition building and train-the-trainer.
  • Conduct needs assessments and identify skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
  • Work with the Executive Leadership Team to develop an on-going culture of education & training, revised curricula in key areas, and identify opportunities for staff to go to trainings outside of Council 28 to broaden skills for the benefit of the employee and the organization.
  • Works with the Director of Human Resources to conduct effective on-boarding and new employee orientation sessions for all WFSE staff. Monitors and evaluate the training program’s effectiveness, success and make adjustments to ensure the program is meeting the needs of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven work experience as a labor educator or training manager.
  • Track record in designing and executing successful training programs.
  • Familiarity with a variety of training methods (mentoring, coaching, on-the-job training, classroom training, virtual learning, workshops, simulations etc).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Strong report writing and record keeping ability.
  • Ability to plan, multi-task and manage time effectively.
  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in leadership development, education, labor studies or related field.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
  • Working knowledge in MS Office (especially Powerpoint).

Special Note:

This position is overtime exempt and will be required to work some weekends.  Travel is normally limited to the assigned area of responsibility.  Must have a valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance. Benefits include annual and sick leave, $150 cell phone allowance, medical/dental, life, and long term disability insurance, and holidays. Salary range is $76,685 to $88,773 and will be determined commensurate with experience.
