This position is responsible for coordinating the work of the digital and paid marketing teams and providing strategic, technological, editorial and design direction for AFSCME's digital advocacy and communications efforts to ensure effectiveness in meeting the organization’s overall goals. This includes the union’s main website, campaign microsites, email campaigns, social media pages, and the mobile messaging program. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Digital and Paid Marketing, this person independently collaborates with various departments and partner organizations, as well as assisting in the conception, strategy and implementation of online campaigns, in collaboration with multiple partners across the organization. Additional duties include:

DUTIES:

  • Provides strategic direction and support for digital advocacy and communications efforts including political, organizing and legislative campaigns.
  • Plays a leadership role on the digital and paid marketing team by training and developing junior staff members.
  • Provides guidance and training for affiliate digital initiatives. Works closely with affiliate executive directors and communications directors, political representatives, and organizing directors to set up training programs.
  • Researches and develops new technologies and techniques for interacting with AFSCME's online audiences.
  • Evaluates technologies and processes and implements needed changes.
  • Continually tests assumptions and builds on best practices for email, social, SMS and other platforms.
  • Works with departments and affiliates to assess their online needs while identifying future needs and opportunities.
  • In coordination with the data unit, ensures standard and useful analytics are being collected. Makes recommendations regarding infrastructure and content based on data.
  • Serves as a proxy for the Assistant Director within the international union and with affiliates.
  • Coordinates and reports on the work of the digital and paid marketing unit.
  • Selects and manages vendors and consultants for various projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in web development, labor relations, communications, journalism, political science or liberal arts.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in web design, content development, online communications and development related to labor, political or community organizing and campaign communications.
  • Minimum five (5) years of technical and editorial experience in managing a website, social networking/blogs and creating content needed, or any combination of education and experience.

Skills:

  • Considerable knowledge and skill in applying digital design principles and methods, applications and software such as Adobe Photoshop and other relevant applications in the Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and online collaborative tools and other web authoring, design and project management software. 
  • Strong and proven persuasive writing skills demonstrated by samples of online campaign writing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to analyze and incorporate message research data.
  • Proven ability to juggle several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to editorial excellence.
  • Knowledge of the labor movement.
  • Experience with digital advertising.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with staff at all levels and in a team environment.
  • Experience using content management systems to update website content.
  • Experience conducting webinar trainings.
  • Experience using customer relationship management systems (Salsa, Action Network, etc.).

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with basic video editing.
  • Experience with a media monitoring system.
  • Experience manipulating images and creating graphics using Photoshop.

Experience with web development.

Travel and Work Hours:

  • Occasional travel and extended work hours are required.
