What We’re Looking For:

Are you passionate about fighting for workers’ rights? Making your voice heard for fair and equitable wages, health care, and working conditions for public service employees? Are you looking to apply your labor background and organizing skills in a dynamic way?

If so, the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is recruiting to fill two (2), temporary full-time project organizer positions. These positions report to the Special Project Coordinator and are part of a team responsible for implementing a large-scale internal organizing campaign rooted in effective one-on-one communication with members and potential members at their worksites and in their homes, to increase membership and connect members to their workplace union structure.

Depending on skill and experience, successful candidates will be brought at the Organizer or Journey Organizer level. Those brought in at the journey organizer level will help train and mentor member organizers involved in the project.

Additional duties include:

  • Moving workers to take action in support of their union.
  • Recruiting workers to join in collective action with their co-workers.

Required Qualifications (Organizer):

  • Experience with labor unions, labor or community organizing, and basic organizing principles to win elections or move people into action.
  • Possess good written and oral communication skills, by reading, writing and communicating effectively.
  • The ability to present information and speak clearly to groups of varying sizes.
  • Experience solving problems by analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Pro union and commitment to the values of worker organization and solidarity.
  • Interest and support of public services and the people who provide them, and acknowledge their vital importance to the State of Washington.

Required Qualifications (Journey Organizer): In addition to above qualifications:

  • Three (3) years’ paid experience in union organizing.
  • Experience in all elements of an organizing campaign, including leading other organizers and members to win campaigns.
  • Must be able to work independently and maintain professional boundaries in complex political and local union situations.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Successful track record of empowering workers and growing their union.
  • Desire and commitment to growing the union at WFSE and to help improve public service workers lives through union membership.

Special Notes:

These positions are full-time temporary, project positions funded for twelve (12) months, subject to renewal for an additional twelve (12) months. Travel is required based on campaign needs. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required as a condition of employment.  Must have a valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance. Benefits include annual and sick leave, $150 monthly cell phone allowance, $400 monthly vehicle allowance, medical and dental insurance and holidays.
