AFSCME Maryland Council 3 represents over 30,000 workers throughout the state including staff at MD’s public universities, correctional officers, social workers, clerical support staff, nurses, and road maintenance workers. We organize in the workplace and fight for dignity, respect, and a fair standard of living for all public service workers.

We are currently seeking a Strategic Communications Director.


  • Writes materials for public audiences including emails, leaflets, newsletters, talking points, speeches, letters to the editor, op-eds, background pieces, fact sheets, and social media and press kit materials for various campaigns. Editing and revising others' content as necessary.
  • Frames messages and develops materials for effective communication with multiple audiences, including the media, general public, elected officials, members, and allies.
  • Develops media strategy, provides pro-active media outreach, and fields inquiries from the news media; helps prepare workers or allies for contact with the news media.  Maintains clipping files and communicates press coverage union wide.
  • Manages the Council 3 website and social media feeds, including regularly creating and curating content.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of strategic communications plans for internal and external organizing campaigns.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the Council and its mission.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in organizing or communications in a campaign environment.
  • Experienced in developing campaign message and enforce message discipline in fast-paced campaigns.
  • Knowledge of Hustle and Action Network and understanding of how to use them for organizing.
  • Proven experience in developing social and new media campaign strategies and programs.
  • Press and media relations skills with demonstrated ability to gain a broad audience for campaign messages.
  • Proven ability to create leaflets and other printed materials.
  • Knowledge of advanced graphic design software, video production and printing techniques.
  • Excellent oral written communication skills.
