AIDS and Insurance Companies

WHEREAS:

Insurance companies can deny insurance to applicants who have AIDS or AIDS-related complexes; and

WHEREAS:

Insurance companies can deny insurance to entire groups of people that they designate as high-risk groups; and

WHEREAS:

Insurance companies can cancel policies for individuals who later develop AIDS or its related complexes.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME support legislation barring discrimination by insurance companies against people with the HIV virus, or who have AIDS-related complex or are members of an identified high-risk group; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That people who fit any of the criteria designated as discriminatory because of the HIV virus or who have AIDS-related complex shall have full legal recourse for remedial action, should such discrimination take place.
