Coalition Building

Resolution No. 81
29th International Convention
June 25-29, 1990
Miami, FL

WHEREAS:

AFSCME recognizes the importance of strength in numbers to achieve a better quality of life for members, their families, their community and for those most vulnerable in our society; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME shares common goals and concerns for a fair and just society with many other organizations. By working with them, on an ongoing basis, we have a far better chance of reaching our mutual goals together. Coalitions can be a powerful force for constructive changes and progress in our society; and

WHEREAS:

Building strong public support from a variety of constituencies in a community is a strong defense against contracting out, deinstitutionalization or other issues that affect the welfare of our communities as well as threaten our jobs; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has successfully formed coalitions with other organizations around the issues of affordable housing, child care, civil rights, and affordable health care, just to name a few.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to develop positive relationships with other national and local organizations on issues of mutual concern; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That this 29th International Convention urges AFSCME locals and councils to actively promote grassroots coalition building throughout the country to strengthen the union's ability to improve the quality of life in our communities.
