31st International Convention

San Diego, CA

WHEREAS:

            AFSCME International is in the forefront of the union movement in the development of comprehensive community programs and community relations projects, and

WHEREAS:

            AFSCME has greatly enhanced its ability to reach more affiliates, community groups, other unions and national organizations; and

WHEREAS:

            AFSCME has provided direct assistance to our members and to communities during natural disasters — hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes; and

WHEREAS:

            AFSCME has assisted council and locals in the design and implementation of anti-privatization, mental health, employment assistance, coalitions building and other programs.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

            That this 31st International Convention urges AFSCME locals and councils to establish community action committees; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME provide technical assistance, counseling and training to AFSCME locals and councils in the establishment of community action committees; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME assist councils and locals in the development of community programs which highlight the contributions of public employees.
