Disaster Relief Fund

WHEREAS:

            The International Union, through the Community Action Department, has provided assistance and coordinated relief efforts, including temporary housing, for affiliates, members and communities affected by disasters; and

WHEREAS:

            AFSCME members across the United States have recently been severely affected by flood, hurricane and earthquake disasters; and

WHEREAS:

            The International Union and the AFSCME family have always come to the aid of our membership in troubled times; and

WHEREAS:

            During natural disasters the Union has provided support in the form of money, water, shelter, clothing and food.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME International establish a disaster relief emergency reserve fund; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME strongly encourage affiliates and members to contribute to the fund; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME establish a training and education program which will provide training in disaster preparations and recovery from disasters for members throughout the country; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

            That AFSCME remain prepared to respond to disasters immediately with quality assistance and technical support.
