Steward Recognition

Resolution No. 63
32nd International Convention
June 17-21, 1996
Chicago, IL

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has long understood that the shop steward is the backbone of a strong, effective local union; and

WHEREAS:

Day in and day out, AFSCME stewards tirelessly carry out their responsibilities to provide leadership, organize, communicate, and represent their union brothers and sisters on the job; and

WHEREAS:

In an era of rapidly changing and evolving work environments, the AFSCME steward is called on to effectively address an increasing variety of challenges--combatting sexual harassment, protecting the rights of employees with disabilities, monitoring health and safety, utilizing employee assistance programs, and redesigning government are but a few examples; and

WHEREAS:

The AFSCME steward plays a critical role in the workplace, transforming the union in these challenging times; and

WHEREAS:

Despite these extraordinary efforts on behalf of the union and union members, the steward often remains the unsung hero of AFSCME.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That all AFSCME locals, councils, and affiliates be urged by this convention to implement programs, at least on an annual basis, that recognize, honor and celebrate the AFSCME steward; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME affiliates continue to provide stewards with ongoing training and support so that they can be prepared to provide quality representation to members, build a stronger union at the work site, and meet the challenges of a changing work environment.
