Increase Minimum Wage

Resolution No. 79
32nd International Convention
June 17-21, 1996
Chicago, IL

WHEREAS:

Minimum wage has not been increased for nearly a decade; and

WHEREAS:

During this same period of time, members of Congress have enjoyed several raises, as well as cost of living adjustments; and

WHEREAS:

A member of Congress makes more in one month than a full-time minimum wage earner makes in one year; and

WHEREAS:

Several major employers will conveniently save millions in uncollected surcharges and taxes due to the shutdowns of the federal government last year which could pay for a wage increase.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International vigorously exert its political influence to demand the passage of an increase in the minimum wage.
