36th International Convention - Anaheim, CA (2004)

Supporting Redistricting Integrity

Resolution No. 9
36th International Convention
June 21 - 25, 2004
Anaheim, CA

WHEREAS:

Legislators in certain states recently have engaged in purely partisan attempts to redraw congressional district lines to their political advantage without regard for the manner and schedule by which redistricting has always been carried out; and

WHEREAS:

These redistricting efforts have been undertaken subsequent to previous redistricting plans having been ruled on by the courts and subsequent to election contests having been run in these court-approved districts.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME supports efforts underway in Congress to limit states to redistricting once per decade following the decennial census and reapportionment of congressional seats, such as H.R. 3856, introduced by Representative Gene Green of Texas and co-sponsored by other members of the Texas delegation.
