Saluting and Supporting the Role and the Leadership of Women and Youth in Building the Movement Against Donald Trump and His Vision for America

Resolution No. 1
43rd International Convention
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
July 16 - 20, 2018
Boston, MA

WHEREAS:

AFSCME salutes and supports the role and the leadership of women and youth in the struggles of the new resistance, defending everything progressive in American society and opposing Donald Trump and his vision of America; and

WHEREAS:

Youth were the leadership in building the national struggle against assault weapons to prevent school shootings. The nation was inspired and mobilized by the high school students of Parkland, Florida, after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; and

WHEREAS:

Women, including huge numbers of young women across the nation and world, have taken a courageous public stand against sexual assault and harassment in public and personal life as part of the #MeToo movement. These women’s struggles have brought an end to the careers and influence of hundreds of powerful, famous and wealthy men across the country, setting an example that has the potential to transform the lives of millions of women across America; and

WHEREAS:

Youth have been at the center of the fight for the rights of immigrants, and played a leading role in organizing airport shutdowns across the nation against Trump’s Muslim Ban; and

WHEREAS:

In general, the inspiration and courage of youth and women are the key to the possibility of victory of the new progressive mass movement in America.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

AFSCME will encourage and support the leadership of women and youth, including AFSCME members, their families and friends in building the mass movement to defend human rights, including union rights, and all human progress, and to defeat Donald Trump and his vision for America.
