PEOPLE

Resolution No. 57
43rd International Convention
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
July 16 - 20, 2018
Boston, MA

WHEREAS:

Well-funded anti-worker groups continue to attack workers and their unions both at worksites and through our political system. These attacks are growing in size, frequency and vehemence; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members know that if we’re not in the game, electing pro-worker candidates and getting members involved, then we are losing the game; and

WHEREAS:

Now more than ever, it is imperative that we elect friendly governors and state legislators so that we can turn the tide, give a fair shot to working class people and support the rights of workers to collectively bargain; and

WHEREAS:

The AFSCME PEOPLE program is one of the most successful PACs in the country, both in raising funds to support pro-worker candidates and effectively using those funds; and

WHEREAS:

PEOPLE has shown consistent growth over the last decade. Member research shows that when members are asked to contribute they do, but not nearly enough members are asked to contribute; and

WHEREAS:

In a post-Janus world, it is more important than ever to build our political power by contributing to PEOPLE.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

AFSCME will continue to build our political program and enhance our participation in the political process by achieving growth in our fundraising every year; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

All members and leaders of the union will take responsibility for raising PEOPLE funds and PEOPLE fundraising will be integrated in all of our work; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

Each AFSCME affiliate will endeavor to grow the number of PEOPLE MVPs ($100 per year) by 1 percent or more every year; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

AFSCME PEOPLE will explore all options for increasing PEOPLE revenue, including increasing donation amounts of current contributors, soliciting every member and encouraging their participation, and utilizing dual cards and three-way forms, so that our membership recruitment is linked to PEOPLE recruitment, and that those without payroll deduction can contribute via checking account or credit card.
