WHEREAS:

The availability of quality, affordable child care lags far behind the demand for it and as more parents of young children work, child care needs will become an even greater problem; and

WHEREAS:

Workers who experience the serious illness of a child, spouse, parent — or who become seriously ill and temporarily incapacitated themselves — must often face the loss of their job; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has historically worked for legislation and contracts that would help workers balance the needs of their jobs and their families, taking a key leadership position on family issues; and

WHEREAS:

The AFL-CIO has established an Ad Hoc Committee on the Needs of the Working Family, chaired by AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee; and

WHEREAS:

At the committee's request the AFL-CIO has named June 21, 1989, Children's Day on the Hill to support the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act and comprehensive child care legislation to make quality, affordable child care available to working families.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME endorses Children's Day on the Hill and pledges full participation in the June 21 action.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Executive Board calls on all councils and local unions to join in local activities that will support and strengthen the demonstration at the Nation's Capitol.
