Today is AFSCME’s Lower Health Care Costs Day of Action. After reading Illinois nursing assistant Missy Bennett’s story, take a moment to call your member of Congress and demand they restore the health care funding and lower health care costs.

When yes-men in Congress pushed cuts through the so-called ”Big Beautiful Bill,” they weren’t just changing numbers on a budget sheet. They threatened real people who are facing skyrocketing health insurance costs while risking the health and dignity of seniors, families, and caregivers who rely on Medicaid and Medicare.

Just ask Missy Bennett. She’s a certified nursing assistant at DuPage County Care Center in Wheaton, Illinois, and president of AFSCME Local 3352 (Council 31). Her facility provides daily skilled care for about 200 residents. Most rely on Medicaid or Medicare.

“People really need the services we provide,” Bennett said. “Cuts to Medicaid and Medicare will directly affect us and our residents. Without our help, people will not get proper care or qualified assistance. That puts a greater burden on their family members, who may have to leave their own jobs to care for a loved one.”

The so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” robs working families of care they need while handing out even more tax breaks to billionaires and wealthy corporations who don’t need another dime. It threatens jobs for caregivers and the well-being of patients and residents who have nowhere else to go.

“We already have a shortage of CNAs,” Bennett said. “With more cuts, how can we keep caregivers and hire more?”

Her residents are also worried.

“Many watch the news. They know what is happening. I do not want them to have to think about who will care for them if I have to leave this facility,” Bennett added.

To stand up to the yes-men in Congress who prioritize the interests of billionaires over those of working people, join AFSCME members like Bennett. Let’s Get Organized
