New AFSCME Ads Tell Republicans – It’s Time to Stop the Obstruction. It’s Time to Pass the Jobs Bill!

$175,000 Effort from AFSCME Urges Senators to Protect American Jobs, Vital Public Services

Washington, DC —

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO announced today a $175,000 ad campaign calling on Republican Sens. Scott Brown, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and George Voinovich to stop the obstruction and pass the jobs bill.

The ads, entitled “Jobs Matter More,” send the message that while the national deficit matters, protecting and creating jobs must be the nation’s first priority. The ads point out that if nearly a million more Americans lose their jobs, which is what experts predict unless Congress acts now to help states with their budget shortfalls, the deficit will also skyrocket.

“It’s not complicated, but Republican senators don’t seem to understand: More jobs now mean less debt later. Without help now, there will be devastating cuts to vital public services and major job losses in both the public and private sectors,” said AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee. “The GOP filibuster of the jobs bill means more pain for working families, more debt and a prolonged recession. We’re telling senators that it’s time to stop the obstruction. It’s time to pass the jobs bill!”

An ad calling on Massachusetts Senator Brown to pass the jobs bill ran last week in The Boston Globe and will now run in The Sentinel and Enterprise and The MetroWest Daily News. In Maine, the ads calling out Senators Collins and Snowe will run Sunday in Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, The Kennebec Journal and the Bangor Daily News (Saturday). And Ohio Senator George Voinovich will see the ad in The Plain Dealer.
