Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the Jobless Rate

Washington, DC —

"Today’s news that the nation lost more than 130,000 in July is compelling evidence that much more must be done to help get Americans back to work and our economy back on track. An unemployment rate of 9.5 percent is unacceptable. These numbers make it clear that the Senate was right to pass the Jobs Bill yesterday and that the House must pass the bill next Tuesday to keep hundreds of thousands of additional workers off the jobless rolls. Every Democrat in the Senate voted for the jobs bill. With the exception of two courageous senators from Maine, every Republican senator voted to give 900,000 additional Americans a pink slip.

"The private sector added only 71,000 jobs in July, at a time when the nation’s non-financial corporations are hoarding more than $1.8 trillion in cash. Why is that money not being spent to create jobs and increase economic growth? Why are Wall Street and their allies in the Republican Party doing so little to help America’s economy get moving again? These are questions that every American should be asking as millions of our citizens are out looking for jobs that simply don’t exist."
