“The Deficit Matters – But Jobs Matter More”

Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee regarding the Senate jobs bill

Washington, DC —

“The U.S. Senate must take quick action to protect the nearly 1 million jobs that will be at risk if state and local governments don’t receive help with their massive budget shortfalls. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) has included $24 billion in funding to provide essential, emergency relief for states. Without it, job losses at the state and local level risk pushing us into a double-dip recession – and vital programs the public relies on during difficult economic times will be slashed. Senators have to realize the American people support this funding, even if it increases our short-term deficit. They understand that, at this critical moment, the deficit matters – but jobs matter more. They know that the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs will implode our economic recovery and devastate communities. The only way we can get our economy back on track is to keep Americans working. Without help from the federal government, states will be forced to begin massive layoffs in July – now is the time to focus on saving jobs.”
