“Republicans Are Siding with the Insurance Industry”

Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on attempts by Congressional Republicans to repeal health care reform (the Affordable Care Act)

Washington, DC —

“Congress should be working to fix the economy and create jobs, but Republicans instead decided that their first order of business should be taking care of the insurance companies who helped to finance their campaigns last fall.

“If Republicans in the House had their way, young Americans up to the age of 26 would no longer be able to remain on their parents’ health insurance policies, seniors would face higher costs for life-saving drugs and children with asthma and diabetes would no longer be protected from losing their insurance coverage. Once again, Republican leaders are siding with the insurance industry and against working families by trying to end these important protections.

“It’s time for Congress to get to work on the economy instead of repealing a law that will benefit millions of Americans and keep insurance companies in check.”
