AFSCME Stands with Teachers in Vergara v. California

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued this statement following the Los Angeles County Superior Court’s decision in Vergara v. California.

Washington, DC —

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued this statement following the Los Angeles County Superior Court’s decision in Vergara v. California.

“The decision rendered yesterday by a Superior Court judge in Vergara v. California threatens to punish and silence hundreds of thousands of dedicated public school teachers who work day in and day out to help students achieve their potential. This ruling unnecessarily pits teachers against students, while ignoring what really prevents students from receiving a quality education: unfair and unequal funding, damaging segregation and high rates of poverty.

“No one should tolerate bad teachers in the classroom. There is no argument about that. But hard-working professionals, who devoted their careers to their students, should not be unfairly stripped of their rights and job security on a judicial whim.

“This fight isn’t over. AFSCME stands in solidarity with proud educators nationwide as they seek real solutions to the challenges facing students in our nation’s public schools.”
