AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders’ Statement on the Democratic Presidential DebateWASHINGTON —
AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement on the first Democratic presidential debate:
“We were glad to hear the issues of working families addressed tonight, and to hear ideas that stood in stark contrast to the dangerous attacks right-wing extremists presented in the previous two national debates. Our members are seeking a candidate who will focus on improving incomes for working people who haven’t yet felt the gains of this economy, while reining in the CEOs and corporations who have manipulated the rules to serve their interests. Public service workers, and nearly two-thirds of American voters, know that the best way to fix our out of balance economy is to protect and strengthen the rights of working people to join together in strong unions and speak up together for wages and benefits that can sustain a family.
Following tonight’s debate, we will continue engaging with members on their views about which candidate will be the most effective champion for working families, and who will be able to deliver a victory in this critically important election.”
