AFSCME Opposes Sen. Jeff Sessions for Attorney GeneralWASHINGTON —
AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement expressing strong opposition to the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions as U.S. Attorney General:
“Working people need an independent Justice Department that will consistently defend the rights of everyone.
“Sen. Jeff Sessions, both as U.S. Attorney and a U.S. Senator, has consistently been on the wrong side of history on civil rights and voting rights. He characterized the Voting Rights Act as ‘intrusive’ and, throughout his career, he has consistently pursued an inequitable and outdated view of the law.
“For decades, AFSCME has been at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights and the guarantee of equal protection under the law. Today, we remain committed to the fundamental belief that equal rights pave the way for opportunity. Throughout his career, Sen. Sessions has demonstrated contempt for these values and a willingness to turn the clock back on decades of progress. It is for these reasons that I strongly urge the Senate to reject his nomination.”
