AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders on CBO Analysis of the Graham-Cassidy Bill

WASHINGTON —

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement on the decision by the Senate Majority Leader’s office to hold a vote on Graham-Cassidy without first obtaining CBO analysis of the bill.

“The fact that the Majority Leader’s office is willing to hold a vote without the CBO’s analysis on how their so-called ‘health care bill’ would affect health care coverage and health care costs for American families shows what a sham this entire exercise truly is. Acting only to appease their billionaire donors who have become impatient for a partisan victory and the hefty tax cut they were promised, the bill’s authors have put forward a shockingly dangerous proposal. This bill would be a medical and financial catastrophe for tens of millions of families – that’s why it has earned vocal opposition from hospitals, doctors, patient advocates, Governors and Medicaid directors from both parties, and a majority of American voters.

“Congress should return to the good-faith, bi-partisan negotiations that were in progress before being abandoned for yet another effort to blindly rush through legislation upending one-sixth of the American economy.”
