AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders on House GOP Health Care PlanWASHINGTON —
AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement regarding the health care replacement plan put forward by House Republicans:
“Today, House Republican leaders shared with their caucus options for legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“The measures they propose to replace the ACA are a mix of half-measures and failed policies that will do little to provide coverage to the 30 million people who will lose their insurance if the ACA is repealed. They want to pay for their plan through a tax hike on middle-class families that could potentially destroy employer-based insurance for nearly 180 million Americans.
“Moreover, their plans to restructure and cut Medicaid would destabilize our health care system and state government finances and cause many children, seniors and people with disabilities to lose the health services they need.
“Insurers have warned that the health insurance market will collapse if the ACA is repealed, but GOP leaders and the White House are pressing ahead anyway. Rather than putting the health and economic security of millions of Americans first, they are pursuing an extremist agenda.”
