AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders on Price Nomination

WASHINGTON —

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement regarding the upcoming Senate confirmation vote on Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS):

“In America, when we work hard our whole lives and play by the rules, we look forward to the promise of affordable health care and a dignified retirement. That’s probably why candidate Donald Trump repeatedly pledged not to cut Medicare or Social Security.

“But President Trump has chosen an HHS Secretary who believes tax cuts for the wealthy are more important than health and retirement security for working families.

“Rep. Tom Price has supported raising the Medicare eligibility age and replacing guaranteed benefits with insufficient vouchers. The drastic Medicaid cuts he supports would mean seniors and people with disabilities will lose access to home care and nursing homes. The across-the-board Social Security cuts he has advocated could force retirees into poverty.

“Working families have held up their part of the bargain through decades of hard work and sacrifice, and we cannot afford a Health and Human Services Secretary who puts fealty to millionaires ahead of honoring our country’s social contract. I strongly urge the Senate to reject the nomination of Rep. Tom Price.”
