AFSCME Opposes Proposal to Merge Departments of Education and LaborWASHINGTON —
AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued this statement following the Trump administration’s proposal to merge the Department of Labor and the Department of Education into one federal agency:
“The U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education are each tasked with a mission that is distinctly defined and unique to the needs of America’s working people and students. One agency exists to ‘foster, promote, and develop the welfare of wage earners, job seekers, and retirees … improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.’ The other seeks to ‘promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering education excellence and ensuring equal access.’ The success of each of these agency’s pursuit of its mission is critical to our success as a nation and the future of working families.
“The proposal to merge these two agencies is wholly inappropriate and ill-advised, especially at a time when workers and students are struggling to get ahead. This latest attack on the federal civil service underscores this administration’s utter disregard for the mission of these two vital agencies and lack of respect for the dedicated public service workers who carry out the work of the American people every day.”
