Richard L. Caponi  – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Richard L. Caponi is the director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, District Council 84, which represents more than 8,000 workers in 46 local unions across southwestern Pennsylvania.
Caponi is a 1973 graduate of Baldwin High School.
From 1979 until 1984, Caponi worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Pittsburgh. He became a member of AFSCME Local 2500, was elected to the executive board and then elected president of Local 2500 before being the first corrections officer to join the staff of AFSCME Council 13 in June 1984.
Caponi was promoted to assistant director for Council 13 in 1992 and served in that capacity until his appointment to council director in January 2004.
Caponi is currently a vice-president of the AFL-CIO Allegheny County Labor Council and vice-president of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO; secretary/treasurer of the Southwestern Area Labor Federation of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO; trustee for the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund (PEBTF) and a member of AFSCME Local 1494, Northgate School District.
