Organizing Public Employee Retirees

Resolution No. 127
26th International Convention
June 18-22, 1984
San Francisco, CA

WHEREAS:

One of the major priorities of the AFSCME Retiree Program is to organize retiree chapters and sub-chapters in order to utilize the experience and talent of retired public employees; and

WHEREAS:

The well established principle of a dues deduction system for working members has resulted in a stable membership base and has made it easier to organize new members, and the same system is also needed to build our retiree chapters; and

WHEREAS:

The difficulty in collecting annual membership dues has unfortunately hampered the growth of retiree chapters and lessened their ability to work as effectively as they can.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME councils and locals and the International Union take appropriate steps to provide support and resources in helping to build new retiree chapters and sub-chapters and help to maintain ongoing retiree organizations by seeking the establishment of a dues deduction mechanism from the various retirement systems across the country; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME Councils, locals and Retiree Chapters seek through administrative action or, if necessary, the enactment of legislation, the right to obtain voluntary dues checkoff to assist the growth and strength of our retiree organization.
