WIC

WHEREAS:

The Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has proven to be one of the most effective nutrition programs in the country; and

WHEREAS:

Three million women, infants and children receive WIC supplements of protein rich food; and

WHEREAS:

Even with some growth in the last three years, only about one-third of the eligible population receive WIC benefits; and

WHEREAS:

The Reagan Administration has repeatedly tried to cut this program and has proposed funding for Fiscal Year 1985 which means termination of benefits for between 500,000 and one million pregnant women, infants and children; and

WHEREAS:

Based on the program's proven record of performance, the WIC program should be expanded.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME urge the Congress to convert the WIC program to an entitlement, thus stabilizing its funding.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME strongly oppose any reductions in funding for the WIC program.
