Nuclear Power

Resolution No. 110

WHEREAS:

The failure of the US. nuclear power program ranks as the largest managerial disaster in business history and is one of the most dangerous as far as potential for atomic accident is concerned; and

WHEREAS:

The cost factor involved is astronomical; and

WHEREAS:

Utility consumers face huge rate increases in areas where nuclear plants are being built; and

WHEREAS:

Such problems as those epitomized by the Three Mile Island accident and the recent Chernobyl disaster cause rational people to reconsider nuclear priorities.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International join in lobbying government officials, utility companies and Public Utility Commissions to provide for an orderly phase-out of nuclear reactors as a power source, and assist in sponsoring legislation and funding for research in the use of alternate energy sources.
