WHEREAS:

Women make up 54.4% of the American workforce, but less than 15% of the workers represented by unions; and

WHEREAS:

Women continue to earn less than two-thirds of the wages men earn, as demonstrated by a variety of government wage surveys; and

WHEREAS:

500,000 women, including clerical employees, health care workers, school employees and social workers, enjoy the rights and privileges of membership in AFSCME; and

WHEREAS:

The AFSCME International Union provides councils with an invaluable resource and pool of expertise on issues of importance to women workers.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to develop external organizing campaigns to bring representation rights to women workers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to assist its locals in internal organizing programs targeting their jurisdictions predominantly made up of women workers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to lead the fight to achieve pay equity through organizing, collective bargaining, the judicial system and legislation.
