WHEREAS:

AFSCME has been in the forefront over the last three decades in the fight against hunger; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members actively work on and off the job to meet the needs of children and adults who are hungry in our society; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has gone on record in support of the Medford Declaration, a domestic policy calling for an end to hunger by the year end 2000; and

WHEREAS:

Hunger has no place in America today and must end; and

WHEREAS:

Over six million poor children start their day with no food.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME members continue job related activities that reduce hunger and support community-based organizations, religious and faith groups including urban and rural gardening projects, which provide nutritional meals to those persons and families in our society faced with hunger; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME and its members support public policy which extends benefits of food stamps to unemployed households; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME members should also support public policy which ensures that all elderly citizens are afforded a nutritious meal through the meals on wheel program or congregate feeding efforts. AFSCME members shall also support public policy which calls for the expansion of the Supplemental Feeding Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to ensure that poor mothers do not give birth to undernourished babies.
