Boy Scout Labor Merit Badge and Girl Scout Mother Jones Award

Resolution No. 44
31st International Convention
June 27-July 1, 1994
San Diego, CA

WHEREAS:

Educating youth participating in the Boy and Girl Scout awards programs about public employee labor unions and other unions is a responsibility AFSCME must undertake so young people will recognize the value of labor unions when they enter the labor force; and

WHEREAS:

The history of the trade union movements role in attaining employee protections and rights is not taught to students in the vast majority of schools; and

WHEREAS:

This lack of knowledge could eventually lead to greater ignorance and misunderstanding of the goals and objectives of unions.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the International Union encourage affiliates to participate and expand their participation in the Boy Scout Labor Merit Badge program; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Union encourage affiliates to participate in union education pilot programs of the Girl Scouts Mother Jones Awards project which is aimed at the growing number of women entering the job market; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That affiliates send information about participation in the Boy Scouts Union Merit Badge and Girl Scout Mother Jones Award to the International Union to provide a record of the importance of these programs.
