WHEREAS:

The right to vote is the mark of a free society; and

WHEREAS:

This right was extended from white male property owners to people of color, women, and those without personal wealth only after decades of struggle; and

WHEREAS:

Widespread voter registration of the powerless in American society is a goal that has not yet been achieved; and

WHEREAS:

To work towards this goal, AFSCME has designed TAKE 5, a program in which members register and take five new voters to the polls in November.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME pledges to make membership voter registration a priority between now and November; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME pledges to make implementation of the 1993 Universal Voter Registration Act a priority on every AFSCME job site where voter registration is supposed to be taking place; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME pledges to cooperate with partisan and non-partisan groups in voter registration projects targeted towards groups that are under-represented in the voting population; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International Convention delegates pledge to register and TAKE 5 new voters to the polls in November.
