WHEREAS:

AFSCME has more than 80,000 correctional officers in our membership, and corrections is the fastest growing public employment sector throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS:

The threat of privatization has become a major source of concern in the corrections field; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME continues to lead the fight to protect the interests of correctional officers throughout the country against privatization, to enhance their professional status, and to achieve public recognition of the critical function that correctional officers fulfill in the law enforcement system of the United States; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME recognized the importance of this profession by creating AFSCME Corrections United; and

WHEREAS:

The continued organizing of correctional officers will enhance the strength of AFSCME; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME correctional officers, through their participation in and identification with ACU, have transformed it into a major feature of their union identity.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME will change the Corrections Advisory Committee to a standing committee to be called the AFSCME Corrections United National Steering Committee; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the size of the committee shall be determined by the International President; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the committee shall be composed of correctional officers and those in closely related fields only; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That the International President will make all appointments to the committee including the Chair of the committee.
