AFSCME International Scholarship for the National Labor College

WHEREAS:

The AFL-CIO and its affiliates created the National Labor College at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in order to offer working union members the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies or Master in Public Administration; and

WHEREAS:

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees supports the Degree and Master's Programs for our union members and staff and recognizes the need for our members to seek higher education; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME President Gerald McEntee sits on the governing board of the National Labor College; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has already established one scholarship program at the National Labor College open to Organizers.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME's International Union will establish 4 annual scholarships open to all AFSCME members and staff who are NLC students in good standing or applicants to the Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree Programs at the National Labor College, George Meany Center for Labor Studies; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the scholarships will be awarded based on the financial need of the applicants; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That twice per year, each scholarship will offer the scholarship recipients $1,000 to be applied to tuition, books, and room and board at the National Labor College. Each scholarship will be renewed for a second year based on satisfactory performance in the previous academic year.
