WHEREAS:

Much of AFSCME's organizing success in 2001 was built on our effectiveness at extending and improving collective bargaining rights for public workers; and

WHEREAS:

Public sector labor laws in the United States are a patchwork quilt of conflicting, confusing and often inadequate legislation. Public workers in more than one third of the states and countless local governments still have limited collective bargaining rights, or no rights at all; and

WHEREAS:

Workers in many states, who do have collective bargaining rights, must still fight to improve and retain those rights; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME is the only union with the ability and track record of winning collective bargaining laws; and

WHEREAS:

All AFSCME members benefit from the extension of collective bargaining rights to other workers.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue its fight to extend and improve public worker collective bargaining rights; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue its fight for federal legislation to give all public employees the right to collective bargaining.
