WHEREAS:

The political, grassroots lobbying and fundraising program of the union, known as the AFSCME PEOPLE program, plays a vital role in combating right wing attacks on AFSCME members; and

WHEREAS:

These conservative, business-oriented, anti-union groups are also promoting legislation at the federal, state and local levels directed at removing the labor movement as a whole from playing a legitimate role in the political process; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members work very hard to make gains at the bargaining table, which are directly related to their gains politically; and

WHEREAS:

Member participation in the PEOPLE program is essential for the union to protect the vital public services they provide, as well as their job security, wages and working conditions.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the International Union, through its political, legislative and fundraising departments promote the education of the union's leaders, staff, officers, stewards and members on the importance of the PEOPLE program; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
