Social Service, Public Assistance and Child Support Caseload Standards

Resolution No. 57
38th International Convention
Moscone West
July 28 - August 1, 2008
San Francisco, CA

WHEREAS:
Social services, public assistance and child support caseworkers, many of whom are members of AFSCME, deliver vital services to needy Americans; and

WHEREAS:
The caseworkers who administer these programs to their neighbors fight poverty and the moral decay of human dignity every day; and

WHEREAS:
Many caseworkers manage caseloads that are so high that they are unable to provide clients with the service and attention they deserve; and

WHEREAS:
Some states, rather than reducing caseloads and engaging caseworkers in efforts to provide high quality service, instead are attempting to privatize casework.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will work, through collective bargaining and legislation, to establish reasonable caseloads for social services, public assistance and child support caseworkers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will continue to vigorously fight attempts to privatize social services, public assistance and child support casework.
