AFSCME California seeks two interns to work full-time in our downtown Sacramento office. Expected hours are 35 per week at an hourly rate of $17 (additional benefits not included). Interns will work directly with the Assistant Director and other staff to support the legislative and political agenda of the union and participate in activities designed to elevate the political stature of the labor movement.

Specific duties: Extensive persuasive letter writing campaigns; tracking and analyzing identified legislation and the annual state budget; contacting and maintaining relationships with State Legislators, staff, committee consultants, and stakeholder groups; attending committee hearings at the State Capitol; performing research; and administrative support, among other duties as assigned.

Requirements/eligibility: commitment to work 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday through October 2023; enrollment in upper division or graduate level course work or recent graduation from an accredited California University; intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel; proficient knowledge of the Internet as a research tool; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and excellent analytical skills.

Preferences: Communications Studies, Criminal Justice, Government, Political Science or related majors, or law school experience; experience with/knowledge of labor issues, local and state level political arenas, and the California legislative process.

A skills assessment may be required of all candidates.
