This position is responsible for coordinating the recruitment and development of experienced union organizers. Works with the Staff Recruitment/ Development and VMO Coordinator to perform a variety of recruitment and job placement activities with a goal of attracting and retaining qualified organizing talent. 

 

DUTIES

  • Provides classroom and one on one training for organizer applicants, organizers and lead organizers.
  • Develops and implements training curricula for organizer training programs.
  • Conducts performance evaluations of organizers and recommends strategies for improvement.
  • Conducts recruitment outreach for organizing positions with colleges/universities, student organizations, community organizations, other unions, and fraternal labor organizations, etc.
  • Interviews and makes recommendations for organizing candidates.
  • Develops materials for outreach and promotion of AFSCME campaigns and the organizing program.
  • Works with the VMO program to help identify and train potential candidates from AFSCME’s membership.
  • Assists in the overall strategy to raise the visibility of AFSCME’s organizing program.
  • Prepares and maintains proper records of all recruitment related activities.
  • Coordinates with the Human Resources Department as appropriate on new hire onboarding requirements.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

Skills:

  • Union organizing experience and/or relevant community/political organizing.
  • Experience mentoring organizers and members.
  • Knowledge of recruiting techniques and strategies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use personal computers, including setting up and maintaining databases and web-based applications. 
  • Ability to work with direction and execute projects effectively and meet prescribed deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Ability to communicate in a foreign language is desirable.
  • Ability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in various settings.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.

 

Travel & Work Hours:

  • Work is performed in a variety of employment settings including workers’ homes and neighborhoods. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, and extended work hours are required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
