AFSCME members turned out in record numbers to get out the vote for New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherill, whose campaign was focused on lowering costs.
“From increasing access to great schools and quality hospitals to improving transit options and infrastructure, Governor-elect Sherrill knows the key to affordability is strong public services. That is why she’ll make sure the AFSCME members who power New Jersey have the support they need,” Saunders said.
Saunders expressed confidence that Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger would also work to expand public services throughout the commonwealth.
“Governor-elect Spanberger understands that our communities depend on the public service workers who keep them running,” Saunders said. “Now, with a pro-worker governor and pro-worker majorities in both chambers of the legislature, AFSCME members can look forward to being provided the resources they need to deliver for their communities, to workers’ voices being protected on the job, and the freedom to join a union being expanded across the state.”
AFSCME District Council 37, New York City’s largest public worker union, congratulated Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido said in a statement that the election results showed that working-class New Yorkers are “fed up with a system that benefits the few over the many.”
“We’re proud to be one of the first unions to endorse Zohran for mayor, and we look forward to working with his administration to ensure New York City becomes an affordable place for all who live here — especially those who make this city run,” Garrido said.
